[EDC = Every Day Carry]. For me, it’s a Case Russlock. It’s an awkward style which I love, it can be opened with one hand, and I really enjoy the scales. What is oppo carrying?

Kershaw for life. The click of that thing saved me at least my wallet.

(Setting: on campus leaving library alone, man is following me, same size as me)

As he gets closer he’s saying something I don’t understand and I say that then he yelled wallet and I reached in my back pocket and grabbed my Kershaw and flicked her open, and the bitch ran.

Click-end of altercation

Gerber “Bear Grylls” POS from Target. I work in Packaging and have to open ~10 fedex deliveries a day. The serrations make short work of the tape regardless of how dull the blade gets - and it is very dull. I used to carry Spyderco, but I think I lost $150 worth of them before I wised up and went the cheapo route. I’m not the type of guy who loses things (i.e. I still have the first pair of Ray-Bans I bought in 1985) but I can’t use the clip in my office environment and knives just jump out of my pocket.

This one. It looks cool, but the base of the blade is wrapped around the finger hole, giving it done wiggle room. Overtime, if you don’t pay attention to it, it wiggles enough to unscrew the whole thing. We can probably put it back together, but we choose not to. MrsZtp will probably use the parts for a project/craft of hers.

My other is a very recent addition. I picked it up while I was on vacation in Asheville. It’s an SOG SwithPlier multi-tool. I’ve been looking for a good multi-tool to use as an EDC, but everything I’ve found has been too big and bulky. Then I can across this guy. Nice and compact. Spring-assisted opening (hence the name SwitchPlier). The only downside is that getting the tools out is a bit of a pain. That’s why I still carry the CRKT as well. And they both clip on my pocket side-by-side with no issues. I can still fit my iPhone 5S in an OtterBox case in there no problem. So, I get the utility of the multi-tool when needed, plus the quick-draw with the CRKT in case of emergency.

For what I use a pocket knife for the small utility knife is best. Cutting up cardboard or hoses or whatnot will dull a regular blade so a utility knife that uses replaceable blades works for me and I prefer to use smaller knives so they don’t need a belt sheath or take up a lot of room in my pockets. Just personal preference.

Ye olde Swiss Army Knife, with Conoco logo. I think it’s a Tinker?

Kinja'd!!!

My brother gave it to me because he didn’t want it. I like it because it’s relatively slim and light and has a keyring. All my EDC stuff has to either go on my keychain, go in my wallet, or be my phone. I also have a USB drive with handy utilities for family tech support, although that hardly gets used anymore, and a NiteIze DoohicKey (yes, really). I got the DoohicKey originally because I wanted a prybar that I didn’t really care if it got bent (it was $5), but it’s very handy for opening boxes and I don’t mind giving it to my 6-year-old for opening boxes, because it’s not actually sharp. Also, the bottle opener is better than the Swiss Army Knife.

Kinja'd!!!

Been kind of experimenting with this in place of the Swiss Army Knife. It’s a Guidesman (Menards brand), but also sold as a Snap-On, so go figure. Either way, $15 gets you a reasonably solid mid-size multi-tool without a bazillion blades. Folded up, it’s a bit more bulky/heavy than the Swiss Army Knife, so it’s not as comfortable in the pocket and I’m less than thrilled with it hanging off my ignition. So I’m not completely sold for EDC, but I keep it handy at my desk.

Seeing a lot of Kershaw love here, and it makes me want to pick one up. I used one for quite a while at an old job and it was the bomb.

It’s legal here, as it is mostly anywhere in the U.S., usually as long as it’s under 3” long (the blade, not the whole knife). Of course the stigma of carrying a knife is sometimes frowned upon. Knifes are not evil, just like guns they are tools. It’s what people do with the knife that gives it a bad reputation, but I’d say 99% of people carrying a knife use it properly. You only hear about the bad ones.

I carry it for a few reasons, one being that it’s a handy little tool when you need it. Another reason is that my wife, MrsZtp, loves and collects knives. She wants me to carry a knife with me everywhere because it is a handy tool. Just don’t use it as a pry bar, she’ll get on your case for that, lol. Sometimes I need something cut; like a thread or a fruit, and I have a way to do that. I also have a hobo knife (spoon, fork, and knife) in my lunchbox, because it’s useful.

If someone can legally carry a knife, I say go for it. Of course, check your restrictions, as some places do restrict what you can carry. For example, Michigan says it can’t be longer than 3” long and you can’t carry it with an intent to harm (how that is gauged I have no idea), nor can you carry a banned knife (switchblade, automatic, or gravity), but anything else is free game. It’s why I have a butterfly knife (usually associated with gangs) that’s under 3” long.

Why do you drive a car every day? You do realize they could be weapons, too? How many people are killed by cars every year? Do you use knives in your kitchen? Most, if not all standard kitchen knives are bigger than what an average person carries.

It’s not the tool that’s bad, it’s what people sometimes choose to use it for. Also, you can take away items that tend to be considered weapons, and people will find alternatives. It’s not the ‘weapon’, it’s the wielder.

Also, check out bladeforums.com. If you think knives are merely weapons, you’ll see a world you never knew existed.

Ah, Australia, that makes sense, they are very restrictive there for various things.

Think of it this way, a knife is a tool that can be miss-used. It’s the same with any tool, for example, a hammer can be used as a weapon as well. It's the person using the tool, not the tool itself. :).

We aren’t that restrictive. I’d say we have a lot less rules than the US. We have a thing against weapons because we had a really bad massacre a couple of decades back, so we tightened up the laws. This is contrast to America, where really bad massacres happen fairly often but nobody is allowed to change the laws.

Yes, but some tools are worse than others. And some tools have more uses in public than others.

Killing someone with a hammer is harder than a knife or a gun, and hammers are very useful. Ditto for cars.

Killing someone with a knife or gun is easier, and they’re not that useful outside of your kitchen/house. Like I said, I’ve never needed a knife in my daily life, which consists of travelling to and from work most days. When I do need a knife, my work kitchen or place of dining is usually happy to supply me with one, I don’t need to carry one in my pocket.

But that’s me.
